David Lincoln Burdick 7/23/42-8/9/09
August 18th, 2009
First Churches Member David Lincoln Burdick, 67, passed away suddenly at his home in Deerfield on Aug. 9, 2009.
Born in Milton on July 23, 1942, he was the son of the late Arthur James and Emily Louise (Freethy) Burdick. A graduate of Milton High School, he attended Boston University and then enrolled in the School of Theology at Acadia University, Wolfville, Nova Scotia, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in History with an emphasis in English Bible. In his early years, David was active in youth groups at First Baptist Church in East Milton. He was a member of the Grand Order of DeMolay.
He worked for many years in retail management in Quincy, Avon, Conn. and Northampton. He later worked for Massachusetts Electric Company (National Grid) as a Metering Services Supervisor. In his retirement, he worked part time at Yankee Candle in South Deerfield. For many years, he was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Northampton, and then First Churches of Northampton where he served as a Deacon and Church Moderator.
Coming from a family which had researched its connections to Revolutionary and Civil War events, his interest in American History was sparked at an early age. In recent years with his wife and close friends, he took great pleasure in being able to finally have the time to tour sites and battlefields of the Civil War and historic landmarks in and around Washington D.C. Mr. Burdick was a Mayflower descendant.
Left to mourn are his wife of 45 years, Gretchen (Dane), formerly of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia; two daughters, Jennifer Patricia Burdick of Deerfield and her partner, Michael O’Connell, and Melissa Laurie Brett and her husband, John, of Simsbury, Conn.; four grandchildren, Tyler Brett (13), Erin Brett (9), Gregory Poitras (7) and Emily O’Connell (2); two sisters, Dorothy L. Schatz and husband, Ernest, of Osterville, Mass., and Virginia B. Bambrick of Saratoga, Calif.; as well as five nieces and nephews and their families.
A loving husband and father and devoted grandfather, his presence, wry wit and humor, steadfastness and constancy will be sorely missed by his wife, children, grandchildren, extended family and close friends.
A service to celebrate and honor the life of David Lincoln Burdick will be held Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009 at 10 a.m. at First Churches of Northampton, 129 Main St., with the Rev. Dr. Peter Ives officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Churches of Northampton/Oceanwood Camp Scholarship Fund.
